This is the second time we have been trapped in a place like this, and the first time those captains [the instructors] tortured her when she failed to do a good job.

Just thinking maybe we can fix the situation would be good for our heads, you know? Whether it is people working on the ship or people giving you support and watching your back.

[ He frowns, not liking the sound of that one bit. ] Guess we'll just have to make sure that never happens here. [ He's seen no evidence of it, at least, but who knows. At least Bruce knows that he has the ability to stop something like that from happening if he has to. And good luck torturing him - that won't end well for anyone. ]

I agree. At least we have a purpose, and it'll be uplifting for the rest of the crew, too. Always raises the morale a little, when we're not just drifting aimlessly. Sometimes it feels like we are.

[The captains here aren't as pointlessly crew. Just desperate, kind of aimless assholes. Maybe they don't intend to be, but that they're kept here, with hands marked. That's not exactly the traits one would associate with a good person.]

Yeah. I know what you mean.

Even if they know the planets we go to...

Well, we know for a fact that this ship was on Caducus Primary before we were even on board, most likely with a whole different crew. It's almost as if the Moira's stuck traveling in one big circle.

[ Now there's some food for thought. Because Bruce needs more paranoid theories to keep him up at night and everything. ]

I wonder if there are also charts of good planets to dock and load up at.

[Leave it to Niko to be a little less paranoid. He's actually a bit too trusting at times, even with his cynical nature. Even if he sort of accused them of stealing the ship, he's a career criminal. He steals vehicles. He can't judge as others can, and didn't really see that as being that bad if that were the case.]

Or it is going back the way it came.

I'm not sure why Caducus Primary would be on that list, considering.

[ Seriously, there's a room full of glass pieces and statues, exactly the kind of stuff that the natives in Caducus Primary had claimed the Moira crew had stolen during their last visit. Even if it had been an entirely different crew and the current captains had stolen it in the meantime, Bruce isn't really buying that they wouldn't have checked the rooms and found all that in there.

Bit difficult for him to be that trusting - or trusting at all. He's learned the hard way that that's not how people work. ]

Or that. One way or the other, makes you wonder how many of the planets we'll dock will recognize the ship. I can only hope not all of them will have bad stories to tell. [ Though next time they're told to leave, Bruce is making his way back onto the ship right away. Not taking any more risks. ]

The probably thought it was an easy target and they wouldn't remember. But ah... when I was in the merchant navy, there was always ports that it was okay for our ship to visit. Sometimes people would leave the ship, never come back and use it as an excuse to escape their mother country.

You do it enough, you get caught. The ship gets impounded. But it is still an open port.

So I guess there are a bunch of open ports on the way home. Yeah, the ship might have been there before, and maybe they fucked up in different places, too. It's not so much trusting as... well, maybe that part isn't as strange as it looks. What is strange is that they are pretty obviously thieves. I used to be a career criminal. I know what sort of shit smuggling can get you into. And ah... none of it good.

[Used to be. That's a nice thing to say. Even if the CDC made him do terrible things, he can still use the words "used to be". His mother would be exceptionally proud of him.]

[ Bruce nods at the explanation, easily making sense of what Niko's telling him. He imagines it's something like that, that even knowing what might've happened on a previous visit, they thought the natives wouldn't remember it now. And maybe, if it weren't for the sentiment that the natives ascribed to their glass creations, they wouldn't have. ]

Makes things a little complicated for us.

[ Or for most of them, anyway - Bruce doesn't know everyone on the ship, for all he knows a lot of them were or are thieves, but he does knows that he isn't, for instance, unless one counts the odd shirt or pants that he took, whenever he came to naked in the middle of practically nowhere. Yet they were all stuck here, being lumped together by crime or crimes they had nothing to do with.

Not that Bruce was one to talk, when the Hulk destroyed an entire planet. But then that wouldn't have happened if the captains hadn't deemed Caducus Primary as a safe place to visit either. ]

But you're not anymore. [ No judgment, really - what people were before coming here hardly matters to him, at least not when it comes to stealing or smuggling. Bruce might not have been as understanding if it happened to be something much worse. ] At least we haven't run into any similar problem on this planet yet. There's still something going on, but no word that the Moira was ever even here before.

[ So maybe they lucked out on that. ]

No. My home was kind of a shitty place. Here? Not so bad. [It's amazing what being desensitized from being a child soldier lets a man be capable of. But at least now he's trying to use that for... sort of good...]

[He doesn't want to be kidnapped and forced to kill a lot of people again anyway.]

That doesn't mean I like being owned. And yes, I agree. I've been riding around with Snake, looking for information.

We have not found much.

Really? [ Bruce arches his eyebrows a little. ] Well, I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

[ He would much rather be back in New York himself, for instance, but of course it shouldn't surprise him so much that not everyone comes from a world even remotely as nice as his. What issues he has, he will always have them, no matter where he goes. It hardly changes with him being here. ]

It's surprisingly difficult to find anything. People do seem to know something, but no one talks about it. Any recorded information is virtually nonexistent, as if someone's doing their best to keep the whole thing quiet. [ Which, of course, only makes Bruce want to know what's happening even more. ] Thanks to what happened on the planet, the dreams and that broadcast, we know that it has something to do with Link'd, and these Komai too - some kind of group opposing them. But that's where the whole thing starts and ends. The details are impossible to figure out.

[She's pretty sure Bruce would ignore her call but Steve is unconscious and probably dying. Neither of them have the luxury to avoid the other right now.]

[ Any other day, Bruce likely wouldn't have answered a call from her. But considering how crazy things are right now, he wouldn't ignore it, not when it could mean that she or someone else was in trouble. Still, a text is a safe bet - a series of them, even better. Because his MID buzzing once, he could ignore for a while, but when it pings four times in a row, he immediately thinks it must be something serious.

Quickly finishing with someone's injuries, he goes read the texts - and immediately feels his heart clench in his chest almost painfully. His jaw tenses, and for a few seconds he just takes a moment, taking deep breaths. Steve's hurt. Shot. From what Wanda's telling him, it doesn't sound good at all.

Panicking isn't going to help him, though. He can't exactly hop out of the ship and onto the transporter to get them here faster either, so he does the next best thing: he calls her. ]

Wanda. [ He says curtly the moment her face shows up on the screen. He'll need video, it'll help him to see the damage. ] Show me the injury.

[She doesn't waste words, just pans from the camera from her own pale face to Steve's shoulder. The marbled red energy that's been serving as an extra layer of protection shimmers out of existence, revealing the blood-soaked clothing strips Wanda used for makeshift bandages.]

Here [the clean shot through his shoulder] and here. [The worrying one, the shot that clipped his lung.]

[ The wound to his shoulder doesn't worry Bruce too much. It should be easy enough to fix, and even Steve's system must already be working to keep him alive, even with the bullet still lodged in there. The other one, though, has Bruce frowning, worry written all over his face. ]

Is he still breathing? [ Important, if the bullet happened to graze his lung. Kind of hard for him to tell through video. A thought occurs to him then, and he asks, albeit hesitantly. ] Can you use your power to get the bullet out?

It's hard for him, but yes. [Come on Steve, please be too stubborn to die. They're so close to help...]

I can try, if you think I should. I was afraid I would hurt him more. [And what if it's holding back a cascade of blood? He's definitely bleeding on the inside somewhere sensitive; the blood trailing from his mouth isn't all from the earlier lip wound.]

Alright. That's good.

[ He pauses, biting his cheek a little. ] Look around you. Can you find some-- some kind of tube, or anything like that? The bullet might be near his lung and that's not good, especially because if he's bleeding in there, you need to take the blood out. [ Unless she can also use her power to do that. Not something Bruce likes much, but he can't afford to be picky at this point. ]

[She glances around - wow, some of the Moirans are slobs.] You will not like it.

[She holds up two straws, a normal one and something thick that looks like it could have been used for Earth bubble tea. Not ideal, but it hasn't even occurred to Wanda that her powers might work instead. The mere thought of it would make her stomach turn.]

I can keep looking...

[ It's a pretty tricky procedure, which is why he doesn't suggest her powers either. One wrong move to the left, one anatomic miscalculation on her end and she could kill Steve. The straw is... well, disgusting, but it's safer, given their options. ]

I'll like it much less if Steve ends up choking in his own blood, so. [ He clears his throat, shaking his head as if to clear it. ] It's fine. Clean it up the best you can. We'll have to hope that the serum will keep him somewhat safe from germs. [ Not like it makes much of a difference, when he already has a bullet in there, and Wanda will be doing this without any gloves on. ] Then here's what you need to do: you need to take out the bullet, calm but steady. Not too fast, but not too slow either. Once it's out, you need to pay attention to his breathing. If he starts wheezing and coughing up blood, then his lung is definitely punctured. You'll have to put that straw through the bullet hole until blood starts coming out. You have to really push, but not so hard that you'll put another hole on the other side of his lung. Now, remember that even unconscious, he is going to react to something like that, so you need to find a way to keep him steady. The way to be sure that it worked is when he starts breathing more deeply again. [ He delivers all that in a calm and even tone, as if he's not telling her to pretty much stab into Steve's lung with a straw. ] Did you get that?

[Oh, she got that all right. Wanda looks at the straw like it's grown a rather impressive set of teeth, then at Steve, and goes even paler. She was expecting to maybe put it in his mouth and get the blood out that way, not...well.]

You want me to stab him with a straw.

[She still looks really unsure about this, but her eyes flare red anyway. X-ray vision is not in her skill set, but Wanda can still psychically feel her way around enough to find that particular bullet.] I can feel it. It's such a small thing...

[The red in her eyes fades and she looks back at Bruce. She'd have to pull it either back through or very close to said sensitive parts and that's not anyone's idea of a good time.]

I can't. It's too deep, I can't see it...is there anything else I can do?

[ Bruce practically holds his breath, fingers resting over his own mouth as he watches the feed quietly, hoping she's getting somewhere with her power. He has no idea how much she can do when it comes to moving things, and he knows that even then a situation like this isn't exactly common, but there's really little else they can do.

When she says she can't, his shoulders slump, a silent sigh leaving him. ]

Not unless you have something else with you to get the bullet out, no. [ He presses his lips tightly. ] You're sure you can't reach it? If you can't, we'll just... have to wait until you get here.

[Wanda takes a deep breath and looks back down at Steve. He can't feel it, but she's squeezing his hand so tightly her knuckles have gone white.]

If I can't...will he die?

[Her voice is small, scared.]

[ Bruce falls silent for a moment at the question. He doesn't want to pressure her into doing this, but... ]

I don't know, Wanda. It depends on how long it takes for the transporter to get to the ship, and how badly hurt he is. But, if I have to take a guess... I'd say his chances would be a lot better if you do it.

[ He wouldn't have suggested it, otherwise. ]
